Arbor Day, Portland (AKA Stumptown) Style (Part 2)

Arbor Day in PortlandIf you’ve lived in the Portland area for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard it affectionately referred to as “Stumptown.” The nickname was the result of massive clear cutting in the 1800’s to make way for growth and expansion in the region. It turns out however, that Portlanders love trees. (Maybe even more so than our craft beers!) Following the removal of much of the timber in the area, Portland began to replant. It is now recognized as a Tree City USA, a designation by the Arbor Day Foundation, which it has been since the program was first established in 1976.

With Arbor Day approaching later this month, there are a number of organizations and community events in the region that showcase the commitment to protect our existing trees and promote the planting of new ones in our urban areas. You can also learn more about the history of Arbor Day and Portland’s affinity for trees on  our blog. Check out the following posts.
