Tree Charities Worth Giving To

‘Tis the season of giving! The holidays tend to evoke a desire to be charitable. Not only with our loved ones but also toward people and organizations that can truly benefit from a gift. Probably not on the forefront of your mind is considering gifting to tree charities. However, we here at Arbor Pro would like the opportunity to explain why donating to organizations for the benefit of trees makes a wonderful way to spread cheer beyond the season.

Trees are not only a natural, renewable resource that can be used to provide lumber to build houses, firewood to heat homes, grow food, and help keep the air clean, but they also add to the enjoyment and beauty of the environment. Think about the trees in your life… perhaps you had a tree fort as a child or you spent many of your summer days in a swing suspended from a tree in your yard. Maybe it is a special family tradition to go to a nearby farm to select the perfect Christmas tree. This past autumn, did you find delight at the sight of the leaves on your neighborhood trees turning crimson and gold? Trees play a pretty important role in our lives so perhaps you consider giving back this holiday season.

We’ve compiled a short guide to giving and include a few of our favorite local and national tree charities to help you decide which organization to donate to.

Tree Charities – Guide to Giving

Friends of Trees

Friends of Trees

This Portland-based organization has planted over half a million trees in the Portland, Vancouver, and Eugene-Springfield areas since 1989. The mission of Friends of Trees is to improve the urban tree canopy and restoring sensitive natural areas. This is accomplished by their commitment to offering programs such as neighborhood tree planting events and green space restoration. They are volunteer driven organization and rely on donations of both time and money. Monetary donations to the Friends of Trees are tax deductible.

Portland Fruit Tree Project

Portland Fruit Tree Project

Have you ever been walking through your neighborhood in the late summer and noticed a tree so full of pears that the fruit has started to drop to the ground and rot? It’s an unfortunate waste considering the hunger so many people in our communities face.

The grass-roots, non-profit organization is working to help fight hunger. They do it by providing fresh, healthy produce to community members that need it. There are many ways to get involve with the project including becoming a tree scout. Tree scouts are volunteers that canvas neighborhoods to identify productive and underutilized fruit trees. Harvesting ripe fruit that would otherwise go to waste is one way to help. Providing a cash donation which is tax-deductible is another way. Both will help put fresh fruit on the table of thousands of low-income families.

Oregon Environmental Council

Oregon Environmental Council

The mission of the Oregon Environmental Council is to help keep our water, air, and land unpolluted. Trees, as we know, naturally assist in the process of detoxifying our air. Programs offered by the Oregon Environmental Council help to ensure that solutions are found to meet environmental challenges and to protect our natural resources, including trees. Donations in any amount can be made directly on their website.

Arbor Day Foundation

Arbor Day Foundation

This is the largest nonprofit organization specifically dedicated to the conservation of trees and forests. Programs offered by the foundation help restore habitats and ecosystems in forests, provide community programs to create urban “forests” within cities around the country, and offer education on a variety of tree-related topics.

Members, supporters, and partners, whether they gift financially or with their time, contribute to the impactful mission that the Arbor Day Foundation makes on our communities.
